Lip-Talk 04 : Silkygirl Pop Soda Lip Jelly (03 Strawberry Pop)

4:50:00 PM

Hi y'all!

If you've been following this blog for a while you'd definitely know i went through a phase of obsessing over transparent lip bullets (i still am obsessed actually, now you know that my obsessions runs deep, it doesn't go in a flash! I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with my obsessive personality *LOL*), an obsession that sparked from getting a glimpse of Maybelline Pop Stick over the internet. Having no access to that product (Maybelline Asia doesn't seem to stock on Pop Stick for some reason), i continued obsessing until one day i saw these dupes : Silkygirl Pop Soda Lip Jelly in Jakarta's Guardian (Surabaya's Guardian didn't stock them yet back then).

Picture from Google, sorry for the tiny image-i cannot find a better quality ones! It's super hard getting their images on the net!
Actually you'd find a lot of pictures of them from MY blog if you Google Silkygirl Pop Soda Jelly. Weird.

Now, this product's been available for... Almost a year. But somehow they never really took off. It's not that popular, i wonder why. Maybe because not every woman in this region's a total kid at heart (like moi) who loves their lippies plastic toy-looking *LOL*. Or maybe it's just too weird and gimmicky most people wouldn't even give it a chance. Anyway, i went gaga when i went to JB and purchased four of them (two with the same flavor by mistake).

The first out of three variants that i own (and will review in this blog) that i've been using a lot is this one in 03, Strawberry Pop.

The packaging looked cute with big strawberry (different shaped stickers, depending on the flavor you got) sticker and Soda Pop Lip Jelly writing, but sadly everything's a sticker!
Transparent bottom that supposed to show the color of the lippie's bullet but this one i got was super faded and pale looking (this is why i accidentally got two of this flavor, because i saw they had different colored bottoms-the other one's pink just like it's supposed to be)

Once you stripped off the sticker, the tube itself would be revealed and it's super plain and boring looking T.T whyyy, the product inside's super fun and unique, the packaging should totally reflects on that!
The tube itself comes in a boring silver color and the top is transparent. The material's kinda flimsy and cheap looking (even though they are not that cheap at all! It's around IDR 64.500 locally, which is a lot more expensive than regular Maybelline/Revlon lipsticks!) and i read in (the very few that's available) the reviews how it's very easily cracked, i didn't realize before writing this review that mine's also already has 3 cracks on them -___-
Now forget about the packaging, the bullet itself is a far cry from the boring casing! It's pink, it's transparent and it's CUTE!!!
It's slightly lighter colored in real life and overtime has become even more transparent, i have no idea why

From their appearance, i was a bit afraid that it'd be too jelly-like and fragile, but the bullet's actually quite sturdy. It's not super jelly textured either (which would be bad coz it might snap in no time), maybe more like... Very firm jelly? LOL. It glides on easily enough but not creamy (obviously) and i guess it does leave a slight sheen on lips but nothing too noticeable. I'd say the result's similar to lightly tinted lip balm, but without lip balm's strong moisturizing power.

The packaging stated that you should apply two layers and wait 30 seconds for the color transformation and it'll be medium pink color, i found it to be light pink instead if you only add two layers.
Before and after

My lips were sevely chapped and pale that day so i think the color transformation looked quite significant? As it's not your regular lipstick, it is very lightweight (i don't really feel like i was wearing anything). It's also not drying (even though it does nothing to really moisturizes my lips as well). The scent's like a strawberry soda, very artifical and sweet. Not my favorite scent (i prefer fruitier scents without the zing of soda, but this is called Pop SODA after all!) but it doesn't bother me either.

As it is not super moisturizing, i prefer to add moisturizing lip cares on top. I used this lip jelly for 6 days non-stop on our Taiwan trip (i actually find my lips to be healthier on trips because i always put on lippies-and therefore lip cares, multiple times in a day! I tend to neglect my lips when i'm just staying at home. Bad bad me!) and i always paired it with this VOV Cherry Lip Color Care that has a slight pink tint as well and they complemented each other nicely.
Match made in heaven : VOV Lip Color Care in Cherry and Silkygirl Pop Soda Lip Jelly in Strawberry

Combination of the two created a very sweet, shiny pink puckers!
Since this lip jelly is very sheer, it's more suitable for everyday use when you want a softer, more natural looking lips. As we went to Taiwan at the heat of summer (i just found out on that trip that four seasoned countries' summers are no joke! It's actually a lot HOTTER than our tropical summers!) which pretty much melted us, it also manage to slightly melted my lip jelly!

I was pretty shocked when i pull out my lippies there and saw it perspiring as crazy as my hunny! LOL

It looked super ugly zzzz, but after a night at a full air conditioned room, again to my surprise-the sweat bullets firmed up and it looked pretty normal again (just not as smooth as it was before).

Staying power's actually pretty good, so maybe it's more like a light lip tint in a jelly texture? LOL, i'm gonna stop confusing myself and you now :p. I find it to still be there *just faded* after i drink and eat. I liked to use it in many many layers to make it slightly more noticeable (to achieve the Medium Pink it claims, i'd say you need at least 10 layers *LOL*), i topped it up once or twice in a day for 6 days straight so i actually already managed to use almost half the tube by the end of the trip *i do eat lip balms, apparently*.

This lip jelly contains vitamin E and and supposed to leave your lips soft and supple, from my experience-while it is not drying, it definitely didn't moisturize either. If you have very dry and chapped lips, i don't think this product's for you as it can aggravate the dryness further while it's not possible to use lip balms (unless you have a very good one that has no oil whatsoever in them. It'd be impossible to apply this on top of a slippery base, i'm pretty sure the color won't show) underneath. If you have moderately dry lips like me, you need to invest on a glossy lip care or moisturizing lip gloss to give your lips a healthy look. Chapped, dry lips are never attractive, aren't they?

I bought them in JB (on special offer) for around RM 12 (IDR 40.000), they sells around IDR 64.500 locally (BUT their blog stated the price to be IDR 45.000, maybe it's cheaper at the counter? I know for a fact that they sell it for IDR 64.500 or even 67.500 in Guardian though) but goes on a sale all the time (they sell around the same price as in Malaysia on offer or slightly more expensive), if you're interested in them i'd strongly suggest you to wait for special offers since i do think it's quite overpriced on regular price. Last time they had a Buy 1 Get 1 offer in local Guardian and i thought it'd be a great time to get the two flavors that i hadn't get yet, sadly they Buy 1 Get 1 offer only stood for the same variant, i wasn't interested to get two of them in the same variant so i had to pass. If they have future offers that is good enough i'd make sure to get the missing two variants from my collection!

Recommending this for those of you who loves quirky, cute and unusual lippies with soft and natural pinky color (i heard that all of the variants has the same effect so if you're not a maniac like me you should only get 1, at least at first and see how you like it). This would also be a good first lippie for teens/tweens who just started using make up as this is very soft and subtle (and cute enough for youngsters, or young-at-hearts like me!).

Not recommended for those who wants good color payoff, opaque colored or very moisturizing lippies.

Will i repurchase? Well, yes. I am a sucker for cute products and despite all of their shortcomings, i find them to be cute enough *and nice to use* to repurchase. On promotions, of course!

I'm gonna leave you with a selfie while using this lip jelly, alternately you can also see all of our Taiwan trip's posts because i was wearing it in all those pictures!

    1. Yes it does, doesn't it? But it's actually totally solid and not fragile or fluffy! Actually i didn't put on any glittery anything, it's the lighting that makes the glossiness appear glittery :D

  11. Jelly is such an apt name for this range! My goodness, a Silkygirl lipstick is more expensive than Maybelline or Revlon?!! That is insane! They can't attract much with those prices...
