January Movies

Is there any medication i can take for short term memory loss? ZZZ.

I know i said i would mash January and February movies together because according to my (clearly unreliable) note, we only watched two movies in January. Writing a post for two movies makes me a bit (okay, a lot) lazy so i thought i'll just add the two movies to February Movies. But then i realized there are more movies that we watched than the ones on my list,. if i insist on adding them to Feb movies-the post would be too long and i'd be even lazier to write WTF. So here i am, writing about January movies at the end of February *sigh*.

We actually watched 5 movies on January. If i don't forget any other, that is!

Without further ado, let's just start, for goodness sake.

1. Alvin and the Chipmunks : The Road Chip

I liked Alvin's first movie, i thought it was funny, cute and endearing-but the quality got worse and worse in each movie, i thought the third one was quite bad. I didn't find that one to be funny, the jokes too forced and it was boring. So i wasn't excited at all for the fourth one, but since i have a young son who loves to watch movies in the cinema as much as his parents do, whenever there's an age-appropriate movie playing i'd offer him to watch it, and he wanted to watch this so... We did.

Dave (their "dad") is finally on a serious (new) relationship, when the boys saw a diamond ring, they immediately presumed that he was going to propose to the woman. They have no problem with her, but her son (who's a total troublemaker and became their enemy FTL) is. They also thought they'd get dumped if Dave marry her once he get himself a real family, so they made it a mission (alongside Miles, the son of Dave's girlfriend) to stop the proposal-getting into a LOT of troubles all the way (obviously).

It was actually not that bad! Not super fantastic or anything, but it was quite funny and touching (much better than the last one)! I didn't find myself getting bored, and i quite enjoyed the movie! It's not a must see of course, but it's not entirely horrible either. Totally watchable!

2.The Forest

We just got back from Japan (and wanting desperately to go back hahaha) when The Forest played in the cinema, i was immediately drawn to it when i read the synopsis of the movie taking place at the well known suicide forest, Aokigahara. The reviews were not very favorable, but i think the background itself is too interesting to pass so we went to watch it anyway.

Sara has a troubled twin sister (who always make a mess of her life, and Sara always has to clean it up for her) named Jess. Jess lives in Japan and teaches English at a local school. One day during a school trip, Jess was seen entering Aokigahara alone-that usually means hte person doing it wants to commit a suicide-and never got out. Sara is certain that Jess is still alive, so she went to Japan to look for her. She finally entered Aokigahara alongside a reporter named Aiden and is warned to stay on the path (among a list of don'ts), but there's a sinister power in that very forest that plays with people's minds, especially those who has a sadness in their hearts, and things started getting more and more weird.

It began rather promising, i really like the background (errr yeah, i became obsessed with Aokigahara and browsed about it for hours. I also developed an obsession to go there, not to kill myself of course *LOL*, just to see it. As i definitely have no sadness or any intention to die, i'm sure i'll be alright hahaha), the storyline is also not that bad really, but i think the movie's totally underdeveloped. And the ending was so unsastisfactory, it was annoying. Still, i don't think it's as bad as people made it out to be, it's not a must watch, but die hard horror movies might not necessarily think it's a total waste of time.

They need to explore Aokigahara more and make better horror movies there, i mean... the place's perfect for one! Make a scarier one please (this one's not scary at all)!

3.The 5th Wave

I guess i don't follow movie news much because i didn't even hear about The 5th Wave before, and even when it starts playing, i wasn't interested in it. Even after i heard good things about it, still i had my doubts because... well, it's an alien movie. And i really don't like alien stuffs *yeah yeah, i believe in ghosts but not aliens. Sue me*, but i really really like Chloe Moretz *LOL* and that's reason enough to go watch it.

Cassie is a normal teenage girl, with a normal life, normal family and normal teenage problems. One day her world (and the entire world, actually) turned upside down when a series of alien attacks starts happening. Her family members dies one by one except for her and her younger brother who then got separated from her. Cassie will do anything and everything to reunite with him. Along the way, she meets a (n insanely hot) young man named Evan Walker. Together they try to find Sam and survive the fifth attack of the aliens.

I'm glad we went to watch it because it's really good!!! First of all, the aliens aren't green and they don't have antennas so that's already a step to the right direction *LOL*. Chloe's acting's all solid and likeable as usual, the storyline is interesting and gripping, the action scenes cool and did i mention Evan Walker is H.O.T?

Alex Roe as Evan Walker

The only thing that bugs me a bit is how the chemistry between Chloe and Alex seems to be very superficial, i just don't think they're in love (in the movie, i mean). Maybe that's how it's supposed to be? Should i read the book?

Anyway, I can't wait for the second movie!!!

4. The Boy

Ever since i first saw the trailer, i've been waiting impatiently for this movie to play. I mean... a haunted doll made after a dead child??? So up my alley!!! Or so i thought. The movie turned out to be nothing like i expected and i left sorely disappointed. Oh, and please people, stop writing spoilers on your Facebook statuses! Hunny got so annoyed at an acquintance's status about this movie that i have to unfollow them (not unfriend, i just learned that you can unfollow without unfriending people, bliss!) to prevent this from happening again hahaha.

A young American (is it so wrong that i am gleeful that she's described as young? Because the actress playing her is older than me, this makes me feel less ancient hahaha) woman named Greta takes a job as a nanny (at the same time she's also running away from past abusive relationship) in a remote English village. She thought she's going to be a nanny to an 8 year old boy, imagine her surprise when the "boy" turned out to be a life sized doll. It's apparently made in resemblance to the couple's real son who died 20 years ago and they treat him like a living human. They went away on a "trip", leaving the doll to Greta's care with a list of rules that's to be followed strictly. As expected, Greta does opposite of what she's instructed and soon disturbing events starts to happen.

Thanks to the FB status, hunny already knew what the twist is *LOL* #poorhunny but i forced him not to tell me so i could still enjoy the first part of the movie. Once the twist was out... I immediately lost interest WTF zzzz. I don't want to spoil it for those of you who still haven't watch it, but i can say this : if you're looking for a creepy, supernatural horror movie, this is not it hahaha. No wonder i did not get scared for a sec in this movie. I don't like it, skip skip skip! (Having say that, this movie might interest those of you who likes other types of horror movies. It's just not my cup of tea, that's all. It's actually not bad, it was just not what i expected).

5. The Finest Hours

I have a thing for Chris Pine (oh well, i know i know, i have a thing for a lot of handsome actors. What can i do) so of course i was excited to watch this movie, which is based on a true story.

It took place in 1952, when a crazy storm splits the SS Pendleton ship in two, the first part sunk and gone while the other part held more than 30 sailors with nowhere to go. Without the captain, the ship's engineer (who knows about the ship more than anyone else) took the leadership in order to try to survive until help can reach them. Meanwhile in the Coast Guard in Chatham, there's a young Guardsman named Bernie (with dramas in his own life, involving a wife-to-be and previous failed rescue attempts that haunts him) is ordered by the chief to do a rescue mission-which most people believe is a mission impossible and practically a suicide.

I usually like rescue movies, especially the ones based on true story-and this one's not bad (rated 7.1 in IMDb, which is quite darn high. It's hard to please those people who give their rates out hahaha) but i dunno... I was a bit disconnected with it. The rescue part was gripping, of course, but the part in between was a bit draggish for me. I dunno what's wrong with me, but i found it to be just okay, nothing to spectacular. I'm also quite surprised that it's a Disney movie (hunny voiced his surprise as well so i am not the only one hahaha). It's pretty good, but personally i find it to not be a must watch *shrug*.

Well, that's it for January movies that almost didn't happen *LOL*. Did you watch any of those movies i listed?

December Movies

action fantasy

So this month the monthly movies review is more than just a tad late.

I swear i wanted to blog it once i returned from Japan (not more than a week later) but... I kinda forgot what movies we've watched on December (sometimes the movies just jumbled together in my brain and i always say "We watched that LAST month? I thought it was 3 months ago!"). I always write the movies down in my old Blackberry (that i don't use much anymore ever since i got my Iphone. Just use it for BBM and writing down notes) and... Well. I lost my Blackberry in Japan -___-.

If you've been following this blog for awhile then you'd know this is the second time i lost my Blackberry FML. Fortunately (if i can even call it that) this time round i lost it oversea and all of our possessions are insured. You know how i feel about travel insurance, but for once i'm quite grateful that hunny didn't even ask for my opinion and went ahead and got us insurance. Lost it pretty early in the trip so we managed to get the crucial documents from the police (not like it mattered last time, but i am much smarter and bitchier now so the insurance company better not try anything smart to me) and all of other documents needed to claim the insurance. Everything is sent and we're just waiting for the process. They do anything funny there's gonna be a second part of that rant post.

ANYWAY.

That's why i didn't blog sooner. Lost all wills because whenever i think about writing this, i remember about my old, trusted Blackberry again. Some people make jokes about how nice it is, just lose your old things and get a new one when i'm overseas, i know it's just a joke but it offends me a bit. I am not that kind of person. Instead of a new one, i'd be much happier if i can get my old phone back. I'm sentimental like that. Not to mention all of those important notes i have in it. SIGH. Now i gotta start them anew, mostly based on my (crusty) memory.

So i'm not even sure if i'm going to be able to review all of the movies we actually watched last month. Might miss one or two *sigh* coz we simply can't remember!

Oh well, here are those that we do remember.

1. Point Break

If you know me then it's easy to see that this is not the kind of movie i am excited for #LOL. I wasn't. Wouldn't even consider watching it if hunny's not so insistent on doing so. After watching it, even though it wasn't bad or anything, it left me with nothing -___-. Definitely not my kind of movie, but it's still watchable and pretty good to spend some time on.

An extreme sports addict slash famous Youtuber is looking for a change of career, he wants to be an FBI agent after losing his best friend in an accident which he believes to be his fault. His first assignment is to find and identify individuals who comitted some mind-boggling crimes at crazy and extreme circumstances, seemingly without any obvious gain for themselves. He went undercover so deep and found himself in his old world, and finding more than some things in common with the supposed enemies-he found brothership (should i say, bromance?) with them. When things got out of control, he has to make a choice between his new and old world.

This movie is sure is a show off. I mean, loads of adrenaline inducing, BIG scenes that make you gasp and gawk. But i don't see a lot of point in it. I ended up with "But whyyyy?" in the end of the movie *LOL*. Maybe i don't get it because i am not an adrenaline junkie. Heck, i have to be dragged to get on most scary rides (did i tell you i cried when we rode Tower of Terror in DisneySea? Yeah, i did. But more because i was scared because it's my first time. It's nowhere as scary as how i expected it to be *LOL*) so risking your life for the thrill of it... is not something that i can understand. Maybe you need to have that (passion) to be able to be immersed in this movie. In the meantime, it's pretty entertaining and thrilling so i would recommend watching it if you want to live precariously through someone. On the screen.

PS : Luke Bracey reminded me of young Paul Walker and that saddened me. At the same time i can't believe he's 26, he looks so much older than me -____-

2. The Peanuts Movie

I never really watched Snoopy's series (i didn't even know that it's actually called The Peanuts before) when i was little, i was a strange kid who didn't like cartoon too much. When i do watch cartoons, i prefer Japanese ones (Doraemon and Sailor Moon are my fave!). When i saw the trailer, it looks like a sweet, wholesome movie (it was) that i should drag my son to before he gets too old to enjoy it.

Unlike me, you might be more familiar with the Peanuts gang (i only know Snoopy, believe it or not). Charlie Brown (Snoopy's BFF) is a sweet, kind little boy who thinks (and thought of by his peers) of himself as a loser. He fell in love with a pretty red-haired girl who just moved in town and he's trying very hard to be a better version of himself to win her over, with the help of Snoopy-who also spends a lot of time imagining that he's a world class jet pilot in pursue of his nemesis, the Red Baron.

It's a very sweet movie, and innocent. And not something most kids nowadays used to. It's quite pure so i was a tad worried that it might be boring for Little O (he was engrossed. His daddy, on the other hand, fell asleep quite a few times). I personally enjoyed it, there are parts that got me bored (not a fan of those scenes of Snoopy's imaginations), but i did love it in the most part. It also touched me, and i love the moral of the movie as well. They simply don't make that kind of kid movies anymore. I would highly recommend this movie especially for those with young children. It taught us that it's okay not to always be the hero, it's okay to be sweet (most kids these days would think that it's not cool to be sweet), and ordinary. And kindness always wins in the end.

3. In the Heart of the Sea

Wanna see Thor got skeletal? Go see this! Just kidding. It's a great movie, i definitely liked it a lot. It's about the whaling ship that got assaulted by a giant whale (a whale is gigantic already, talk about massive!) and later inspired Moby-Dick. I never read Moby-Dick though, i didn't know what to expect.

This movie mostly tells the story of Owen Chase, an experienced sea-man and whaling expert who has the disadvantage in climbing the "corporate ladder" in the whaling world due to his background. He is, once again, having to take a second place in the newest expedition to babysit a richman's son with the right background to be the captain of their whaling expedition. One fateful day, their ship sunk because of a mammoth sized whale attack and we got to see how the team must do anything and everything they can do in order to survive.

It's good, much better than i expected. I was worried i might get bored (especially because KC insisted and dragged us to watch it in Premiere XXI. I don't like watching movies in Premiere, weird as it might sound. I prefer to sit comfortably in normal movie seats!), but it wasn't boring at all. It was intense and gripping. It's quite of a must see and i am glad to see Chris Hemsworth owning the role. I honestly never liked his other roles other than Thor, but in this movie he really became Owen Chase.

4. Single

I like Raditya Dika a lot, he's so effing hilarious i can't even. I watched most of his movies (but mostly when he plays himself) and never dislike any of them. But i was a bit hesitant about this movie because he's playing someone else and i'm not sure that he's a good actor *LOL*. But i needn't worry, he's smart enough to write the character to resemble his normal self (just a bit stupider and more innocent) that he still looked comfortable enough.

Ebi (Raditya Dika) is a single 27 year old (in Indonesia, if you're still single at 27 it's questionable *LOL*, people are expected to be married in their late 20s), very naive and a little bit of a loser. He still can't find a job (not even a good job, any job at all), lives in a kost an (basically a huge house with multiple rooms rented for various people) with his 2 best friends and still asks for money from his mother. He is very desperate for a girlfriend and tries to find one in any way he can-with the help of his two friends. He then fell in love with a new girl that just moved in, but not only his own insecurity prevent his from making a move, she also comes with her own baggage, including a super annoying "big bro" who always had a crush on her.

It's HILARIOUS seriously. I hate how most Indonesian comedies are slapsticks and stupid nowadays, but with the emergence of those stand up comedians making movies, we are in for a treat! Smarter jokes, subtle but super silly gestures, simple but big hearted stories, well they definitely win us over with their kind of comedy! I highly recommend this movie for anyone, i think it got English subs too for overseas market, hopefully the jokes won't get lost in translation. It's highly recommended and suitable for everybody (except children for some of the cruder jokes).

5. Star Wars Episode VII : The Force Awakens

I'm definitely not a fan of Star Wars, in fact i am one of those who must be eliminated according to Star Wars fanatics because i used to not be able to differentiate between Star Wars and Star Trek *LOL*. I am better than that now, but i still don't know much about Star Wars except for the central characters (thanks for the crash lesson, Little O!). I almost totally refused to watch this movie (because i haven't watched the first 6 movies WTF wouldn't i be more than a little lost?), i tried watching the older ones on TV with hunny and Little O but i really don't like old movies. Alas, my little boy is a huge fan of Star Wars (nerd hottie in the making?) so we went to watch it anyway. I was surprised because it was easy enough to understand (although i did have to ask Little O once i a while who that person on the screen was *LOL*) and it's actually very entertaining!

I'm not good at explaining this kind of movies, so imma copy the synopsis from their IMDb :

30 years after the defeat of Darth Vader and the Empire, Rey, a scavenger from the planet Jakku, finds a BB-8 droid that knows the whereabouts of the long lost Luke Skywalker. Rey, as well as a rogue stormtrooper and two smugglers, are thrown into the middle of a battle between the resistance and the daunting legions of the First Order.

Yeah, that. I don't know if (according to hunny) it's easier to watch and more family (and girls) friendly because it's now owned by Disney, but i do like it a lot (so those who are in the same boat as me, don't worry-go watch it!). It's funny, it's entertaining and it's thrilling. I would no longer resist watching the next installment *LOL*. At the moment i have to deal with a BB8-obsessed husband and Storm Trooper/Kylo Ren-obsessed son. I don't mind collecting the merchandises though, they're cute.

6. Ip Man

Ip Man makes me like Donnie Yen. A lot. I used to see him as this non-descript fighting guy in Chinese movies-but now i totally associate him with Ip Man. Love him as Ip Man, still can't enjoy watching his other movies. It's like he becomes Ip Man now, any other roles makes him look unnatural (a bit like Thor up there).

In this third installment, Ip Man witnessed a band of brutal gangsters led by a crooked property developer trying to take over the city. They even wreak havoc in his son's school because they wanted to buy the place, and the headmaster (who's also the owner, i guess) refused (and rightfully so) to. He and his students kept watch of the school, while his deteriorating wife (unknown to him, she's getting very ill) getting more and more agitated as he spends more time protecting the school (and city) than his own family.

Story wise, it's not as solid as the first two movies. There are a lot more added drama (i'm not sure that the real Ip Man really fought off a black boxer back in the day), but it's still good. And Donnie Yen proves that he CAN act (those scenes with the dying wife...), not only fight. And people commented on how the other guy was trying too hard to be Asian Johnny Depp (LOL. I didn't realize it when i watched it, but i sort of get in when i was told). Lots of fascinating wing chun fights of course, a must see for all martial art fans (or non fans. I was never a fan of martial art anything, but i loved Ip Man), action movie fans, Chinese movie fans, or any movie goers really. I'm sad that this is (most probably) the last time we're seeing Donnie Yen as Ip Man. Unless they decided to make a Bruce Lee movie on this Ip Man-training day, that is.

I THINK that those are all the movies we watched in December. I can't think of anymore, if there's any that i missed then i will be reviewing it when i remember it *LOL*. Like this movie, which supposed to be in October Movies but totally slipped my mind :

American Ultra

There's something compelling about Jesse Eisenberg. He's not conventionally good looking, he doesn't look tough, he's not super charming but i like to watch him. Especially when he's playing a weird, sensitive, anti hero like his role in American Ultra (i like to see him as a cold, badass sorta jerk-like his role in Now You See Me too). Kristen Stewart in the other hand, i don't get her. I don't get how she still got roles *LOL*. I don't think she can act -___-. And she's not even that pretty. I guess Twilight gave her career insurance.

Mike Howell lives in a small town in the middle of nowhere, where nothing ever really happens. He spends most of his time getting high with his girlfriend and write comic books about super hero monkey. But what he doesn't know is that he was actually a trained killing machine made by CIA. He is then targeted for termination, got activated by his former handler (his skills woke up but somehow he still had no idea what's going on, probably due to the drugs) and must avoid all of the killers unleashed by the CIA to eliminate him, save himself and his girlfriend with his newfound powers.

I like this movie, it's crazy! Funny, exciting, and you root for the total loser-with-superhuman-powers to the end! I personally think it's a very cool movie (although you can totally replace Kristen with any generic Hollywood girl, it wouldn't make any difference. She brings nothing to this movie) and would totally recommend this to anyone (who has weird tastes like me).

Okay! That's all! It's almost the end of January and i would have to work on January Movies soon. LE SIGH.

Bare-faced and nerdy looking

October Movies

action movie

Okay, may as well clarify that from now on (eh, actually been going on for a while now haha) my monthly movie review would be posted somewhere in the next month, most possibly towards the end now to avoid any unrequited expectations HAHAHAHA.

Oh well, here are the movies we watched on October :D :

1. The Martian

When hunny told me about this movie, i immediately felt a sense of deja vu. Mark Damon's stranded in other planet alone.. Again? LOL. Only this time he plays the good guy (which suits him better anyway) and the movie's much more entertaining and easier to digest (no weird stuffs) than Interstellar.

During a mission to Mars, the American astronauts were caught in a crazy storm and one of them, Astronaut Matt Watney got badly injured while the rest couldn't find him and must evacuate or risk all of their lives. The whole world thinks Watney's dead, but he miraculously survives and now he has to find a way to keep himself alive (and grow food in a planet where nothing grows) and try to contact the earth to let them know he's still alive.

Unlike Gravity, where we saw a struggle to stay alive that makes us feel well... Kinda depressed, Matt Watney never lost him sense of humor and made us laugh with/at him with his upbeat personality and quirkiness. Of course, it also brought tears to my eyes (towards the end), but this is definitely the kind of movie that gives you hope-a feel good kind of movie (which is fantastic, because sad endings depresses me). Absolutely brilliant, love it! Highly recommending it!

2. The Vatican Tapes

Well. One of the movies which i should've believed the online reviews. As always, too excited for any horror movie-and the trailer didn't look too bad (IMO)-but the reviews mostly are very bad. Still, i persisted because sometimes we ended up liking some movies even though most people hate them (like The Gallows, i thought it was not that bad). Sadly that didn't happen this time, it was... Pretty much crap *LOL*.

Angela Holmes is a very ordinary, normal 27 year old woman, she has a devoted dad (who's just a tad over protective) and loving boyfriend. Life seems to be nothing but normal for her until one day she got into a small accident on her birthday and she immediately began to change. She becomes more and more weird, everything about and around her starting to get really spooky, she somehow even causing others to suffer injuries and death. A priest who witnessed the tragedies around him arranged for an exorcism, but turns out Angela is not possessed by a common demon but by an ancient satanic force more powerful than anyone can ever imagine.

Honestly there are so many possession movies (mostly bad too) nowadays, it's getting tedious. Still, there are a few brilliant ones that make me willing to go through loads of the crappy ones in search for them. Actually i found The Vatican Tapes started off pretty interestingly-albeit predictable-but... it never picked up. I read people saying how the ending's unexpected and brilliant, but i dunno... I didn't like the ending. It's just.... Weird. And somehow it feels like it's ending just when it's about to get interesting. I don't like it at all -____-, just watch other movies and skip this one entirely. Oh, and i really think Michael Pena should stick to comedies.

3. Pan

On the contrary, i wasn't that interested to watch Pan (i'm never interested in Peter Pan, period) and i wouldn't even consider going to watch it if not for Little O (i wasn't interested even after watching the trailer) but like some movies can be, it totally exceeded my (nonexistent) expectation and ended up liking it quite a bit!

Peter lives in an orphanage and with his best friend, he always seems to get into trouble with the horrible head of the orphanage. Peter saw one by one his friends disappeared at night, "adopted" is what they were told but one night he experienced the "adoption" for himself, and he was actually taken to a magical world... the Neverland. But Neverland is not yet like the Neverland we know, it was ruled by a cruel pirate, the Blackbeard (played brilliantly by Hugh Jackman) and Peter started to reveal his origins-to become Peter Pan that we're all familiar with.

Yeah, it's actually a pretty fun movie! Entertaining, colorful, with beautiful costumes and cinematography. It's fast enough to keep me entertained the whole time, no time to get bored! The fantasy world really comes to life (and the mythical creatures, especially the mermaids-they were depicted wonderfully), hunny, Little O and i were really entertained. It was a bit confusing seeing Pan was such a good friend with Hook, i hope a sequel would be made so we'll get to know the direction of this added story will go (i'd love to know how Peter and Hook becomes sworn enemy!). Quite recommended for the whole family!

4. The Walk

Another movie that exceeded my expectation. I wasn't sure i'd enjoy a movie based on a true story of Philippe Petit (a French high wire artists), i mean... Wouldn't it be boring? As much as i LOVE Joseph Gordon-Levitt and all (HATE his hair in this movie, though hahaha). But yup, it's a nice movie alright! With the right amount of amusing scenes, heart stopping scenes (you know, when he's walking the ropes on a crazy height) and heart warming ones.

Philippe Petit has been in love with rope walking since a circus came to his small French hometown, even though his dad didn't approve of his career of choice, he didn't care. He found a mentor in Papa Rudy and dream of walking the twin towers of WTC in New York City. He is determined enough to make his dream a reality and concocted a mad plan with his gang (which includes his then girlfriend, his best friend and some other people they recruited).

Seriously, i found it a bit hard to believe that a movie which center is about a man trying to walk on a rope between two skyscrapers could be so gripping, interesting and entertaing-but it was! So much drama, so much craziness and silliness as well! I hate Joseph's accent (and i repeat, his hair) but he's brilliant as Philippe Petit (he's always brilliant anyway, right?). And i just realized that there is no English metaphor for Indonesian's saying "Nasi sudah menjadi bubur" (literal translation would be "Rice has become porridge". Pretty much meaning "It's done, nothing we can do about it") but there's a French one (i dunno the French words, but it literally means "The carrot's cooked") LOL.

5. Goosebumps

I was a HUGE fan of Goosebumps series when i was young, i have lots and LOTS of the books and never missed one. My son actually likes creepy stories too, but unlike me (i was a strange little kid... A loner too), he's a chicken hahaha. He's always curious, but then he'd get really scared and can't even be left alone anywhere (even in the middle of the day) after watching anything mildly scary (he's better now, though). He recently showed some interests in Goosebumps (yes, they're reprinting the old ones-and maybe there are new ones as well? I dunno) but sadly i've sold all of my old Goosebumps books. He was very excited about Goosebumps the movie, and Goosebumps' never that scary anyway so i knew it was the perfect slightly-creepy movie for Little O to watch.

Zach Cooper recently moved from a big city to a small town and he's having some difficulties adjusting to his new life. He then meets a pretty girl who lives next door who has a very strange and strict dad-who turns out to be R.L Stine of Goosebumps fame. Apparently, R.L. Stine's monsters becomes real and he has to keep them trapped in the books, until Zach accidentally opens one-leading to all of the other books getting opened as well! Now it's all up to Zach, Hannah, R.L. Stine and Zach friend Champ (yes, that's his real name) to get them back into the books before they destroy the whole world!

Er... I dunno, i guess i have a high expectation for this movie (afterall it's not everyday that your favorite childhood series's made into a movie) and it's not bad but it's not fantastic either. Little O was thoroughly entertained (and a bit spooked *LOL*), while i got slightly sleepy at some parts (i guess childhood faves are not the same once you're a full grown adult hahaha). It's still pretty entertaining, funny too (Champ is hilarous), and it's fantastic to see all those monsters come to life. I would recommend this especially if you have children (above 7, the younger ones might find it too scary) who are interested in spooky movies but can't watch the real deal yet!

6. Crimson Peak

Oh.... I LOVEEEEEE this oneeeee :D! It's such a beautiful movie, twisted too hahaha-perfect for an oddball like me! I knew i'd love it since i saw the trailer, and for once i am not disappointed! I love it even more than i thought i would! I love Tom Hiddleston even more now... I'll always choose Loki over Thor hahaha. Oh FYI, this is NOT a horror movie-it's a gothic romance, and that's another thing altogether so don't expect spooky ghosts! There are some jump-out-of-the-seat scenes actually, but not much and the ghosts are often ugly but never scary, just mesmerizing!

Edith Cushing is a rather modern woman for her time, she's a writer and unlike most women writer at that era, she's more into horror stories. One day she meets this tall, dark (not the skin tone, just the hair and eye color hahaha), handsome stranger and she fell in love with him. Her dad disapprove after hiring a detective to look into Thomas Sharpe's background, but he soon die tragically and nothing prevents Edith from marrying Thomas. Once she moves to his castle with him and his sister, ghosts of his past starting to bug her, revealing his dark secrets.

The whole movie has this ethereal, dreamy but dark quality in them. The costume, the dialog... Everything's perfect. I don't find Mia Wasikowska pretty so i'd prefer someone else aesthetically, but she plays the part beautifully so i don't really mind. Tom however, was perfect as tormented, confused but charming and dark Thomas Sharpe, and of course Jessica Chastain.... So wickedly delicious! Love all the crazy twists too! The story's pretty straight forward, but the twist is pretty crazy. I LOOOOVEEEE this, highly recommending this movie for all who are into dark fantasy kind of movie!

7. The Last Witch Hunter

I'm not a fan of Vin Diesel and the only movie he stars in that i enjoy's Fast n Furious franchise (or, i like him as Groot too, but only because i couldn't see his face and he can only say groot, heh heh heh), so i was not that enthusiastic when hunny insisted on watching this movie. Fortunately, unlike his other movies (i especially dislike his Riddick movies), this one's full of mythical creatures, magic and witches-which i love! And yep, i quite like this movie!

Hundreds of years ago, the Queen Witch released the black plague that kills so many lives, the devastated families of the victim swore to hunt her down and kill her, including Kaulder (Vin Diesel) who lost both his wife and young daughter. He succeeded in slaying her, but just before she died, she cursed him with immortality. Fast forward to present time, Kaulder is now the last witch hunter, serving the Axe and Cross to protect humanity from evil witches. In his work, he's always accompanied by a priest called "Dolan" and on the eve of the current Dolan's retirement, he dies in his sleep. Kaulder suspected foul play and found out that a witch killed him. After some investigation, Kaulder and the next Dolan realized that a witch is trying to resurrect the Queen Witch and they had to work together to prevent it from happening.

Yep, i quite like this movie. With all the crazy things witches can do, it's pretty awesome! Even Vin Diesel couldn't spoil the movie for me *LOL*. It's very entertaining, if you like fusion between dark fantasy and action, this is a pretty worthy movie to spend some time on!

Andddd that's all of the movies we watched on October! Mostly are decent and pretty good with the exception of The Vatican Tapes. My fave's definitely Crimson Peak, i spent many days obsessing over dreamy Tom Hiddleston after watching it *LOL*.

Another thing that i've been obsessing over (and still am, since i am currently reading the book number four of the Dollanganger series) is the Flowers in the Attic series. If you like twisted, weird family saga, you might want to check it out! It's a TV movie (s) though so you can only watch it online now. I won't go into detail as i plan to review them separately!

Gotta go now, toodles!

June Movies

action fantasy

Hey hey...

Happy (belated) Eid Al Fitr, my Moslem readers! Hope you have a wonderful time with you family ^^. And for all Indonesian readers, how's the holiday? Must be having lots of fun, yeah? I hope you're not too bummed about the fact that holiday's actually coming to an end! I just got back from a road trip out of town (it's an exhausting 12 hours ride-return) for three whole days (extra stressful because i have both my mum and my MIL with me *LOL*), all i wanna do now is crash-thankfully i've written this post beforehand!

This post is super long overdue too, i don't even have any excuse left (other than no time and mood to write about this particular topic. I dunno why movie reviews are the most brain cells consuming for me!)-i even toyed with the idea of discard June movies entirely and just merge them with July movies, but alas... Have to do what OCD tendencies make me do *LOL*.

Watched 7 movies in total on June, half of them in Singapore (when exchange rates were around IDR 8.000 per dollar, we skipped watching movies in Singapore altogether because we thought tickets were to exp, but weirdly we watched movies multiple times now that dollar is around IDR 10.000 *LOL*. I guess we're less stingy now? I dunno...).

1. Insidious 3

Hmmm... I loved the first installment but find the second one to fell way off my expectation, i was still quite excited to watch the third one though-and so was everybody else, judging from how the tickets kept on selling out like hot cakes in the first few weeks. I don't know if my taste is just different from majority or what, but some people say they prefer the second one-i totally beg to differ. I love Insidious Chapter 3! I'd say it's a total major improvement from the snoozeville that was the second movie to me!

Quinn Brenner (played by Stefanie Scott, who i found to be very very PRETTY. Reminded me of Selena Gomez. I guess they're my type. Hey, girls are allowed to have girls types that they like too okay!) is a teenager living with her father and younger brother. They are still grieving the loss of her mother and they all find it hard to deal with, especially Quinn who's forced to take care of her brother. She tries to connect with her mother's spirit, and after she feels her "mother's" presence, she seeks the help of Elise Rainier (the physic) for further contact-but Elise turned her down because of personal problems. Paranormal events starts happening around their house and each attack is more vicious than the previous so Quinn's dad begged Elise to help her.

Personally i am a fan of classic types of horror movies. You know, scary back sounds, creepy, fleeting ghosts, effective acting and element of surprises. If you manage to shock me, then you got me hooked *LOL*. Insidious Chapter 3 definitely has all those elements and it just WORKS. Some people (like KD) makes fun of the ghosts and says that they look like typical Indonesian ghosts-well for me, when done right, typical Indonesian ghosts are the creepiest! It also has so many funny and kick ass scenes (especially when Elise challenges the ghost that's trying to kill her, the audience started clapping! Trust me when i say that Indonesian audience are very rarely expressive like that!) makes this movie thoroughly entertaining. A must watch for all horror lovers out there!

2. Pitch Perfect 2

I love music, i love singing and i guess it's only natural that i also love movies about badass singing girls! I forgot how much i love Pitch Perfect until i re-watched it a few days before the second movie started playing in local cinema (a month later than the date on the poster) so it totally made me very excited about it. It didn't disappoint, even though i personally find the first movie to be better (less cheesy, less forced scenes) it's still made me leave the cinema feeling uplifted (with a runny mascara because their last performance is DA BOMB).

The Bellas are now seasoned performers but they seem to start losing grip on what's the most important thing : their singing. They also lost their connection with each other and after a humiliating incident in front of the President of the USA, the Bellas are suspended and banned from performing and joining any competition in the country. The only way to clear out their name and regain their status is to do the impossible : winning the international competition (which no American group has ever done. EVER). With their Germany rival breathing down their necks, internal problems and other obstacles, the Bellas must reconnect and strengthen their friendship and sisterhood in order to accomplish their task and reach their dreams, once again.

Please tell me i am not the only one who gets so touched and blown away by incredible singing (or killer dance moves, coz i feel the same when i watch Step Up) that i start tearing! LOL. Those incredible singing is definitely a good enough reason to watch this movie, among other things! The storyline is pretty simple, the comedy sometimes verge on "cringe-worthy" but all in all, still a great, entertaining movie and a must watch for fans!

3. Jurassic World

I watched the first movie when i was a child and i gotta admit, other than my amazement of the dinosaurs (especially the exhibitions that comes with it, with the robotic dinosaurs and all)... I don't remember much about it *LOL*. I guess it's more of a boys' movie? Yeah, hunny was plenty excited when Jurassic World's showing-i was just mildly interested lah *LOL*.

A new theme park is built on the original Jurassic Park (22 years later), everything seems to be going peachy until a new attraction escaped and started a killing spree. What's really bad is that the escaping dinosaur is not really a dinosaur at all, it's a genetically modified breed made of different DNAs so nobody really knows their its real behavior and what it's capable of (I was like... How stupid can they be? Making a dinosaur that's super scary and smart? Of course it's gonna escape WTH). Owen, an ex navy and a current "dinosaur trainer" and Claire (the park's operational manager and the aunt of two boys who went missing when they closed down the park) must try all they might to save the day.

I would say that it's a very entertaining, jaw dropping (all those dinosaurs, again i am in awe even though i'm 31 and hardly a child anymore hahaha), intense and thrilling movie. Yeah, hunny and Baby Boy's definitely more impressed that i am (confirmed a boys' movie lah hahaha), but i would still say that it's a must watch for everybody!

4. Survivor

It's a movie that has gone under our radar actually, which we ended up watching just because we're in dire need of an entertainment and there's nothing else playing at that moment. I was quite intrigued when i heard that Pierce Brosnan plays the villain in this movie, but hm... yeah. I didn't buy it *LOL*. He's pretty bad as a villain!

Milla Jovovich plays a Foreign Service Officer for USA embassy newly located in London to scan and prevent terrorists from entering the USA, but her boss seems to not make her job very easy. An attack was commited with her as the target, but she luckily (she's way too lucky for it to make sense, btw. And for someone who's not a super hero, she sure seems like she one hahaha) escapes but that makes her become the suspect instead. She must then goes on the run and tries all she can to prevent a large scale terrorist attack planned on the new year's eve in New York.

Well. I don't get this movie. Lots of others don't get it either, hence the low ratings-but i guess some others actually find it pretty good if you read the reviews, so i think it's a movie that you either like or hate. I find it a bit boring, weird, the characters confusing (and HOW BAD is Pierce Brosnan's character, as a supposedly elite killer, he's pretty bad at his job! LOL) and the reason why the terrorist is doing what they're doing.... Well, disappointing LOL. Don't take my word for it, you need to watch it to form your own opinion, who knows you might enjoy it like the other reviewers, but if your taste's similar to me then you might want to avoid this movie. It's not worth your time, and money.

5. Poltergeist

Let me start by saying that : sometimes it's best to leave a classic alone. LOL. I think that is more than enough to let you know that i did NOT like this reboot of the classic horror movie!

I guess most people would know the storyline of this movie, it is one of the most famous horror movies of all time (right?) and even though i don't actually remember much of this movie (obviously i didn't watch it when it first came out because i wasn't even born yet!) but i do remember all the furniture shaking and people got thrown *LOL*.

Anyway, for those of you who is forgetful like me, basically this movie (which probably is the base of most of modern day's horror movies) is about a family moving in their new suburban house after their father got let go from his job. The first person taking notice that there is something really wrong is their young son but nobody really believed him until the super strong evil forces kidnap their youngest daughter and the family must work together with some help to rescue her.

Well. I expected so much more from this movie. Like i said, i don't remember the original movie much, but hunny said it's very similar (the haunting part), and what works for 1982, definitely does not work for 2015. I mean... They should make the haunting more fluid, less comic bookish and the effect better? I dunno, i found it to be super duper cheesy and not a second of it was scary. I know the poltergeist would be loud and all, but i expect it to be... You know, more haunting than juvenile. Personally i would advise everybody against watching it *LOL*, just go watch the original instead!

6. Minions

I've always loved minions, i mean... They're so cute and they speak gibberish, what's not to love right??? Unfortunately, i did not like Despicable 2 much so i was not as enthusiastic when i heard they're making Minions the movie, but hey... Since i did not have any expectation, i was pleasantly surprised when i realized that the movie is not bad at all. It's hilarious and silly, just what you should expect from minions.

The story started from the very beginning (basically, the history of minions la hahaha), starting as a single-celled yellow organism that evolve through ages-they have a single purpose in life : to serve the most despicable master. For some reasons (sheer stupidity, i would say *LOL*) they're unable to keep those masters. Without those masters, they lost their purpose in life and fell into a deep depression. One day, a minion (Kevin) decided to venture to the world (alongside Stuart and the most adorbs of all-Bob) to find a new evil boss. They found a potential new master, Scarlet Overkill but will things go smoothly for them?

It's a movie for people with a sense of humor, and i must say : people who has a childish sense of humor. Because if you're too "mature" and unable to leave your logic outside the cinema door, this movie is definitely not for you! You need to have the little kid side of yourself on the ready to be immersed in this movie, and once you do... You'd be thoroughly entertained! It's silly, hilarious, entertaining and you'd want a minion for yourself *LOL*. I know i do!

7. Terminator Genisys

Ugh... Yet another boys' movie *LOL*. Even little boys like Baby Boy (who somehow knows what Terminator is even though the last movie played when he was just 2 years old) wanted to watch this movie (but he couldn't, we watched it in Singapore and it's PG 13). I... on the other hand, was not as excited. You know i'm not the biggest fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger (or Sylvester Stallone *shudder*) and i barely remember the previous movies (i don't even know if i watched the first movies. Well, i did watched the first one, i remember Edward Furlong to be pretty darn cute back then. Oh, i just Googled, apparently that was the second movie? Oh God, i'm confused now), all i can i remember is the robots from the future that can melt into a pool of liquid metal LOLOLOL.

When John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline (i copy-pasted this paragraph directly from their IMDb)-this caused for everything to change. Nothing is like what Reese expected and he has to work with Sarah (who's more than capable to protect herself, nothing like the sweet girl he expected to save) and a very unexpected ally (the Guardian-Arnold Schwarzenegger)-and even more unexpected enemy for a crazy new mission : To reset the future.

Yeah well, the movie's pretty good lah i think. It's probably awesome for boys *LOL*, it was quite good for me too (as in i didn't get bored and the action scenes are quite gripping for me) but mostly i was busy drooling over :

Jai Courtney

Yep, i mentioned him multiple times already, coz he's definitely yummy *LOL*. I hated him in Divergent though (which means he's a good actor, coz he's so evil when he's the villain! But so adorbs when he is the lead), but fell right back in love with him in this movie. So sexy *BB and i kept on complaining whenever he puts his shirt back on LOLOLOLOL*... #slapsself. Anyway. This movie would be so-so for me if he wasn't in it, but since he's the lead... I wouldn't mind watching it again *LOL*. A must watch for die hard Terminator fans (i'd say it's one of the better ones, not counting the original of course. But i might be biased...) and action sci-fi lovers, but if you're not one of them and you happen to be a girl... Don't worry, you can enjoy Jai instead (watching him, i mean!).

That's it for June movies! Overall : not bad at all! My fave is definitely Insidious, followed by Pitch Perfect and Jurassic Park+Terminator+Minion (all draw hahaha). I didn't like Poltergeist nor Survivor, but they're also not the worst movies of the year or anything so they didn't ruin my mood either hahaha.

Which of those 7 have you watched? Did you like them? We have Ant Man and The Gallows waiting to be watched next (i'm too cheap to watch it during the holiday because kinda expensive lah *LOL*)!
