Movie Review : I Am Hope

Hello guys!

As you might already know, i am quite a movie buff. I love watching movies in the cinema and i always do a monthly movie reviews (speaking of which, January movie reviews will be mashed with February's and i'll post it in March for a reason which i'll be explaining in the said post, stay tune!). I also always try to support Indonesian industries (by wearing Indonesian made products, among all), including movie industry so i'm pretty much always on the lookout for a good local movie to support.

That's why when Fika hooked me up with one of the latest Indonesian movies' nobar event (nobar means "nonton bareng", loosely translated into "watch together", sort of like a premiere and supposed to include the actors, producers, etc) for I am Hope the movie, i was quite excited ^^.

Due to some issues, the nobar didn't quite happen *LOL*, well it did-but purely among bloggers only haha.

Before we talk more about the movie, let's take a look at the trailer :

About the movie.

I Am Hope is a movie about this young girl, Mia, who had a pretty successful parents working in artistic industries. Her mum was a famous theater director (whose passion is shared strongly by Mia) and her dad a famous music composer. Growing up, Mia had pretty much everything. She also has this imaginary friend called Maia (whose fashion sense is off the park. Love it!) who's always around her whenever she needs her. Mia could never need her more than when her mum was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away within months.

Mia and her dad (who pretty much lost all of his mojo when his beloved wife was diagnosed) now live modestly since they sold pretty much everything of value to pay for Mia's mum's treatments-but they are still happy-until one day Mia herself's diagnosed with the same disease that took her mum's life.

Despite her dad's insistent on her focusing on her treatment (rightfully so too, i mean... The dude lost his wife and then his only daughter's diagnosed with the exact same thing? That's cruel, man!), Mia is adamant about making her dream of being a theater director a reality. And despite all of the hardship, she and Maia still fight to make their dreams a reality-including by trying to get in touch with a famous theater producer that used to work with her dad.

Thanks to Maia (who represents Mia's HOPE), cancer also didn't hinder Mia from having a love life. She met David, a good looking (if you like the type. Not mine *LOL*), slightly awkward but super gentleman actor who ended up helping her to finally really got recognized by the theater producer Mia idolized, Rama. Mia's dream's almost a reality, but at the same time her condition is worsening and she needs to make a fast choice-her life or her LIFE (as in her passion and dreams).

I want y'all to go check out the movie so i won't spoil the ending for y'all, but i can tell you one thing : it's good.

I am not much of a drama movie kind of person, but I Am Hope did not bore me for a sec, because the storyline is so engaging and it's peppered with good humor, i found myself chuckling in many scenes. The central characters are also developed so well that i root for them.

What i love about the movie? For one, the acting. I was gripped with Tio Pakusodewo's acting as the father-but that's totally expected from such an experienced, veteran actor-what i did not expect is how good the leading actress' acting was.

I'm not gonna lie, i don't really follow Indonesian entertainment industry so my knowledge for local actors are severely limited. I've never heard or seen Tatjana before, but her acting was so natural and engaging that i developed an admiration for her, especially after i learnt that she's only 19 years old! OMG! I can so see a bright future in front of her. Btw, hunny mentioned that from some angles she looks like her screen mom-Febby Febiola, and that's awesome!

I also love how Mia is sick but she's still super strong at the same time. She's not a damsel in distress, she didn't milk her condition to her advantage and she is not the typical woman who lost her head when she's in love. That's a strong woman alright, and strong women deserves my admiration.

Another thing that i love is their portrayal of Maia, the imaginary BFF. She's not depicted as your usual "fairy" in glossy light and feathery costume, instead she looks like your regular, uber hip and cool boho-style BFF. At the same time, hey devil may care attitude and carefree style makes the comparison to Mia' reserved, nerdy, prissy style even more stark. I feel that not only Maia represents Mia's hope, she also represent the other side of her-the wild child, if you may. I believe we all have that side (some more dominant than others) and it's fun that they touched on this in such a way.

I really enjoyed I Am Hope, and i won't lie-i cried quite a bit *LOL*. And i said this many times, when a movie successfully made me cry : it's good :p.

This movie is actually inspired by Gelang Harapan (bracelet of hope), which you can buy to support cancer patients because the profit is donated to cancer foundations. You can buy the bracelet online or at the booths in cinemas while the movie is playing.

I love how the bracelet looks like, they're really pretty! Isn't it awesome that you can support the cause, wear the support and actually looks good wearing it? All the bloggers invited to the Nobar are gifted a bracelet, i haven't gotten mine yet but i can't wait to rock it. And yes, i will buy more with my own money!

I love nothing more than a good movie with a good heart and a good purpose, i believe I Am Hope is one. Not gonna lie that i was a bit annoyed with the event's organizer, but that shouldn't cloud my judgement of a good movie.

October Movies

Okay, may as well clarify that from now on (eh, actually been going on for a while now haha) my monthly movie review would be posted somewhere in the next month, most possibly towards the end now to avoid any unrequited expectations HAHAHAHA.

Oh well, here are the movies we watched on October :D :

1. The Martian

When hunny told me about this movie, i immediately felt a sense of deja vu. Mark Damon's stranded in other planet alone.. Again? LOL. Only this time he plays the good guy (which suits him better anyway) and the movie's much more entertaining and easier to digest (no weird stuffs) than Interstellar.

During a mission to Mars, the American astronauts were caught in a crazy storm and one of them, Astronaut Matt Watney got badly injured while the rest couldn't find him and must evacuate or risk all of their lives. The whole world thinks Watney's dead, but he miraculously survives and now he has to find a way to keep himself alive (and grow food in a planet where nothing grows) and try to contact the earth to let them know he's still alive.

Unlike Gravity, where we saw a struggle to stay alive that makes us feel well... Kinda depressed, Matt Watney never lost him sense of humor and made us laugh with/at him with his upbeat personality and quirkiness. Of course, it also brought tears to my eyes (towards the end), but this is definitely the kind of movie that gives you hope-a feel good kind of movie (which is fantastic, because sad endings depresses me). Absolutely brilliant, love it! Highly recommending it!

2. The Vatican Tapes

Well. One of the movies which i should've believed the online reviews. As always, too excited for any horror movie-and the trailer didn't look too bad (IMO)-but the reviews mostly are very bad. Still, i persisted because sometimes we ended up liking some movies even though most people hate them (like The Gallows, i thought it was not that bad). Sadly that didn't happen this time, it was... Pretty much crap *LOL*.

Angela Holmes is a very ordinary, normal 27 year old woman, she has a devoted dad (who's just a tad over protective) and loving boyfriend. Life seems to be nothing but normal for her until one day she got into a small accident on her birthday and she immediately began to change. She becomes more and more weird, everything about and around her starting to get really spooky, she somehow even causing others to suffer injuries and death. A priest who witnessed the tragedies around him arranged for an exorcism, but turns out Angela is not possessed by a common demon but by an ancient satanic force more powerful than anyone can ever imagine.

Honestly there are so many possession movies (mostly bad too) nowadays, it's getting tedious. Still, there are a few brilliant ones that make me willing to go through loads of the crappy ones in search for them. Actually i found The Vatican Tapes started off pretty interestingly-albeit predictable-but... it never picked up. I read people saying how the ending's unexpected and brilliant, but i dunno... I didn't like the ending. It's just.... Weird. And somehow it feels like it's ending just when it's about to get interesting. I don't like it at all -____-, just watch other movies and skip this one entirely. Oh, and i really think Michael Pena should stick to comedies.

3. Pan

On the contrary, i wasn't that interested to watch Pan (i'm never interested in Peter Pan, period) and i wouldn't even consider going to watch it if not for Little O (i wasn't interested even after watching the trailer) but like some movies can be, it totally exceeded my (nonexistent) expectation and ended up liking it quite a bit!

Peter lives in an orphanage and with his best friend, he always seems to get into trouble with the horrible head of the orphanage. Peter saw one by one his friends disappeared at night, "adopted" is what they were told but one night he experienced the "adoption" for himself, and he was actually taken to a magical world... the Neverland. But Neverland is not yet like the Neverland we know, it was ruled by a cruel pirate, the Blackbeard (played brilliantly by Hugh Jackman) and Peter started to reveal his origins-to become Peter Pan that we're all familiar with.

Yeah, it's actually a pretty fun movie! Entertaining, colorful, with beautiful costumes and cinematography. It's fast enough to keep me entertained the whole time, no time to get bored! The fantasy world really comes to life (and the mythical creatures, especially the mermaids-they were depicted wonderfully), hunny, Little O and i were really entertained. It was a bit confusing seeing Pan was such a good friend with Hook, i hope a sequel would be made so we'll get to know the direction of this added story will go (i'd love to know how Peter and Hook becomes sworn enemy!). Quite recommended for the whole family!

4. The Walk

Another movie that exceeded my expectation. I wasn't sure i'd enjoy a movie based on a true story of Philippe Petit (a French high wire artists), i mean... Wouldn't it be boring? As much as i LOVE Joseph Gordon-Levitt and all (HATE his hair in this movie, though hahaha). But yup, it's a nice movie alright! With the right amount of amusing scenes, heart stopping scenes (you know, when he's walking the ropes on a crazy height) and heart warming ones.

Philippe Petit has been in love with rope walking since a circus came to his small French hometown, even though his dad didn't approve of his career of choice, he didn't care. He found a mentor in Papa Rudy and dream of walking the twin towers of WTC in New York City. He is determined enough to make his dream a reality and concocted a mad plan with his gang (which includes his then girlfriend, his best friend and some other people they recruited).

Seriously, i found it a bit hard to believe that a movie which center is about a man trying to walk on a rope between two skyscrapers could be so gripping, interesting and entertaing-but it was! So much drama, so much craziness and silliness as well! I hate Joseph's accent (and i repeat, his hair) but he's brilliant as Philippe Petit (he's always brilliant anyway, right?). And i just realized that there is no English metaphor for Indonesian's saying "Nasi sudah menjadi bubur" (literal translation would be "Rice has become porridge". Pretty much meaning "It's done, nothing we can do about it") but there's a French one (i dunno the French words, but it literally means "The carrot's cooked") LOL.

5. Goosebumps

I was a HUGE fan of Goosebumps series when i was young, i have lots and LOTS of the books and never missed one. My son actually likes creepy stories too, but unlike me (i was a strange little kid... A loner too), he's a chicken hahaha. He's always curious, but then he'd get really scared and can't even be left alone anywhere (even in the middle of the day) after watching anything mildly scary (he's better now, though). He recently showed some interests in Goosebumps (yes, they're reprinting the old ones-and maybe there are new ones as well? I dunno) but sadly i've sold all of my old Goosebumps books. He was very excited about Goosebumps the movie, and Goosebumps' never that scary anyway so i knew it was the perfect slightly-creepy movie for Little O to watch.

Zach Cooper recently moved from a big city to a small town and he's having some difficulties adjusting to his new life. He then meets a pretty girl who lives next door who has a very strange and strict dad-who turns out to be R.L Stine of Goosebumps fame. Apparently, R.L. Stine's monsters becomes real and he has to keep them trapped in the books, until Zach accidentally opens one-leading to all of the other books getting opened as well! Now it's all up to Zach, Hannah, R.L. Stine and Zach friend Champ (yes, that's his real name) to get them back into the books before they destroy the whole world!

Er... I dunno, i guess i have a high expectation for this movie (afterall it's not everyday that your favorite childhood series's made into a movie) and it's not bad but it's not fantastic either. Little O was thoroughly entertained (and a bit spooked *LOL*), while i got slightly sleepy at some parts (i guess childhood faves are not the same once you're a full grown adult hahaha). It's still pretty entertaining, funny too (Champ is hilarous), and it's fantastic to see all those monsters come to life. I would recommend this especially if you have children (above 7, the younger ones might find it too scary) who are interested in spooky movies but can't watch the real deal yet!

6. Crimson Peak

Oh.... I LOVEEEEEE this oneeeee :D! It's such a beautiful movie, twisted too hahaha-perfect for an oddball like me! I knew i'd love it since i saw the trailer, and for once i am not disappointed! I love it even more than i thought i would! I love Tom Hiddleston even more now... I'll always choose Loki over Thor hahaha. Oh FYI, this is NOT a horror movie-it's a gothic romance, and that's another thing altogether so don't expect spooky ghosts! There are some jump-out-of-the-seat scenes actually, but not much and the ghosts are often ugly but never scary, just mesmerizing!

Edith Cushing is a rather modern woman for her time, she's a writer and unlike most women writer at that era, she's more into horror stories. One day she meets this tall, dark (not the skin tone, just the hair and eye color hahaha), handsome stranger and she fell in love with him. Her dad disapprove after hiring a detective to look into Thomas Sharpe's background, but he soon die tragically and nothing prevents Edith from marrying Thomas. Once she moves to his castle with him and his sister, ghosts of his past starting to bug her, revealing his dark secrets.

The whole movie has this ethereal, dreamy but dark quality in them. The costume, the dialog... Everything's perfect. I don't find Mia Wasikowska pretty so i'd prefer someone else aesthetically, but she plays the part beautifully so i don't really mind. Tom however, was perfect as tormented, confused but charming and dark Thomas Sharpe, and of course Jessica Chastain.... So wickedly delicious! Love all the crazy twists too! The story's pretty straight forward, but the twist is pretty crazy. I LOOOOVEEEE this, highly recommending this movie for all who are into dark fantasy kind of movie!

7. The Last Witch Hunter

I'm not a fan of Vin Diesel and the only movie he stars in that i enjoy's Fast n Furious franchise (or, i like him as Groot too, but only because i couldn't see his face and he can only say groot, heh heh heh), so i was not that enthusiastic when hunny insisted on watching this movie. Fortunately, unlike his other movies (i especially dislike his Riddick movies), this one's full of mythical creatures, magic and witches-which i love! And yep, i quite like this movie!

Hundreds of years ago, the Queen Witch released the black plague that kills so many lives, the devastated families of the victim swore to hunt her down and kill her, including Kaulder (Vin Diesel) who lost both his wife and young daughter. He succeeded in slaying her, but just before she died, she cursed him with immortality. Fast forward to present time, Kaulder is now the last witch hunter, serving the Axe and Cross to protect humanity from evil witches. In his work, he's always accompanied by a priest called "Dolan" and on the eve of the current Dolan's retirement, he dies in his sleep. Kaulder suspected foul play and found out that a witch killed him. After some investigation, Kaulder and the next Dolan realized that a witch is trying to resurrect the Queen Witch and they had to work together to prevent it from happening.

Yep, i quite like this movie. With all the crazy things witches can do, it's pretty awesome! Even Vin Diesel couldn't spoil the movie for me *LOL*. It's very entertaining, if you like fusion between dark fantasy and action, this is a pretty worthy movie to spend some time on!

Andddd that's all of the movies we watched on October! Mostly are decent and pretty good with the exception of The Vatican Tapes. My fave's definitely Crimson Peak, i spent many days obsessing over dreamy Tom Hiddleston after watching it *LOL*.

Another thing that i've been obsessing over (and still am, since i am currently reading the book number four of the Dollanganger series) is the Flowers in the Attic series. If you like twisted, weird family saga, you might want to check it out! It's a TV movie (s) though so you can only watch it online now. I won't go into detail as i plan to review them separately!

September Movies

Hey guysss...

It's well passed mid October and i only write my September movie reviews >.<, for once i actually REALLY forgot to! I only realized that the month has changed sometime in the 10th or something hahahaha. THEN i got lazy-and so many things going on, October's totally full of celebration in this household! 5 family members celebrate their (our, coz i am included) bdays in this month.

Anyway, better write the review before the month ends :p.

1. Sinister 2

I'm always excited whenever a horror movie's showing in the cinema, but i actually forgot that i watched the first movie-until i Googled it and immediately remembered after reading the synopsis. The first movie was actually quite haunting and eery that the plot stuck to my head, although the title clearly didn't.

Picking up from the ending of the first movie, another family (a mother and 2 sons who are clearly running away from something) move into a rural house (marked for death) next to a Church where a horrific crime just took place. The deputy from the first movie is trying to locate the next house marked for death to try to break the pattern when he found the family and tries to save them from Bhughul (the demon).

Like the first movie, it's still very eerie (there's something about kids killing their whole family mercilessly that'd creep the hell out of everyone!) and strange, but towards the end, i did think it's verging on the cheesy side, this part made this sequel to not be as good as the first movie-however, i don't think it ruined the movie that badly still. So yeah, not as good as the first one IMO, but not bad either. Spooky, twisted and weird, if you're a strange cookie like me, you'd enjoy it for sure.

2. Transporter Refueled

I didn't care much for this movie, it's not very bad or whatever-but the new guy's ain't Jason Statham (i can't believe i said that. Since when i like Jason Statham so much. But i gotta admit, he is pretty cool and almost all action movies are cool when he stars in them :p he just got the swag i guess). It's not that Ed Skrein is ugly (although i do find his teeth disturbing), but he definitely couldn't bring what Jason Statham did to the franchise. According to hunny, his "coolness" is forced, and i think i agree.

Frank Martin is a former special-ops mercenary turn "delivery man", he transports classified packages or person (s) for a living. When his father (who always says that he works for Evian but clearly he was a spy) visits him, their weekend got upside down when Frank is hired by a woman and her sidekicks who ended up using his service as a pickup for a heist. Frank and his father got dragged into the whole mess and must play a dangerous game against a sinister Russian kingpin.

Heh. I know Transporter storylines are hardly believable, but this one is rather.... tangled (for lack of a better word) even for their standard. And why did they use the same character, why not just replace him with a new character? Ed Skrein looks nothing like Jason Statham so it's just... confusing!

It's not super bad, but it's definitely not a must watch, totally skippable i'd say. Got rated 4.9 in ImdB and i agree with the numbers.

3. Maze Runner : The Scorch Trials

I liked the first movie a lot (especially because i went in without any expectation) so i was really looking forward to the second movie (partly for Ki Hong Lee, i'm not gonna lie) and it didn't disappoint! A few seconds into this movie, hunny was like "Hah? Why does it become zombie movie all of sudden???", and yeah-because i didn't read the books before and there's no sign of zombies whatsoever in the first movie, i was also very surprised! Frankly speaking, none of us are zombie movies enthusiasts, but trust me, this one's so much more than your regular walking dead movies!

Picking up where the first movie left off, Thomas and his fellow Gladers found themselves in a facility where they are assured to be safe and protected from WCKD. It doesn't take long for Thomas (ever so sensitive) to realize, the place's much more sinister than it appeared to be, especially when they prevented him to see his sweetheart who they said to still be going through different tests. Soon, he discover that it's still WCKD they're against and their only choice to survive is to run away, but running away proven to be as trying as staying.

Well, i like it! Even more than the first one, i'd say! It's so different from the first movie that it feels like watching another movie altogether, and that's refreshing! It's still action packed, nail grittingly good and you're kept at the edge of your seat at all time! One of my fave dystopian movies for sure! And Ki Hong Lee stole the show once again, do you know that there are memes making fun about the fact that his character's more famous than the main character? LOL.

And he really is one of the fine example about how Asian don't age, shocked me when i found out that he's not that much younger than me (i'm practically ancient for Hollywood standard, yeah?), i thought he's in his very early 20s instead of very late 20s!

Anyway, a must watch for dystopian/action/popcorn movie lovers, it's very entertaining and worth every penny!

4. Hotel Transylvania 2

I gotta admit that i did not like the first movie all that much, i thought it was not that funny, very cheesy and dry... I liked the characters, but i was just not a fan of the movie. So i was not very excited about the sequel (if the original is not that good, how can the sequel be any better?), even after i watched the trailer-but Little O was all excited about it so we went to watch it... And i surprisingly enjoyed it very much!

So Mavis is all grown up and she ended up marrying the human boyfriend, Johnny. All's well, they live happily at the hotel and it gets even better when Mavis got pregnant and gave birth to an adorable baby boy, Dennis. But when Dennis is growing up and reaching 5 (the point where it's the final timeline for his vampirism can appear), Drac's getting more and more restless. Mavis feels like Drac could not accept Dennis for what he is (probably human) and that the hotel is probably not a very safe place for a human boy to grow up in so she is considering moving to Johnny's hometown. Johnny loves living in the hotel so he conspire with Drac to make Mavis wants to stay-all leading to huge troubles ahead!

I love this movie! Personally feel like it's 10x better than the first film (wonder if because it's so family related???), i actually LOL-ed a LOT (and got touched. If an animation movie makes me teared, i am sold!!!) and found some scenes to be totally hilarious (my fave is the You Tube video of Drac going coo coo, coo coo)! I guess it's not the best animation movie of all time and not everybody would love it as much as i do (hunny actually thinks the first movie was funnier, which is the total opposite of my opinion, but then again he does like cheesy, slapsticks scenes)-but it's still a funny, entertaining, fun movie for the whole family! Recommended!

5. Black Mass

I have mixed feelings about this one. I didn't want to watch it at first, the trailer looks boring to me, but hunny insisted to so i relented. As usual, when hunny insisted on watching a heavier type of movie, i ended up getting more interested than him, i had to kick him a few times during the movie to keep him awake (even though he'd never admit it. He never does). I still don't think this movie's all that good (i'm not a fan of mafia type of movies really), but it's still very interesting especially because it's based on a true story.

It is the true story of Whitey Bulger, the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston who also happens to have a brother who became a senator (this part is really jaw dropping for me). In the late 70s, Whitey (who was then still a smaller time-but as cruel nonetheless-criminal, but already is the godfather of the Irish Mob) is approached by John Connoly, an important FBI agent who he grew up with in South Boston (or as they call it, Southie), John convinces Whitey to become an informant for FBI to help the FBI take down Boston's Italian Mafia in exchange of some immunity. The deal spins out of control and Whitey made it to FBI's Ten Most Wanted List.

First of all, Johnny Depp in disguise to become pouchy, balding older guy (well, Depp really is not that young either, but he looks young! Especially for his age. I guess normal 52 year old guys might look more like his character than Depp?) is disturbing (but when i see pictures of the real Whitey Bulger, i can see that the make up department actually did a pretty good job), especially those scary contacts he uses *shudder*. The movie itself is a bit slow, draggy at part, very rough and super brutal (i don't have problem watching ghost movies, but gory, brutal ones are hard for me) with loads and loads of blood and graphic murder scenes. I guess it makes the move more real and serves the purpose of telling the story, but that makes it a heavier type of movie that's definitely not for everybody. But if you like true stories about real criminal, yes-this is the movie for you!

That's the end of September movies list! We also watched Everest but i liked it so much i wrote an entire post dedicating to the movie (read it here), but there's another movie i want to mention, it's an old one and i watched it online : The Pact. It's a 2012 movie but just showed in local cinema last years WTF, then the sequel (which is nowhere near as good as the first movie) is showing in the cinema-of course i wanted to check it out since it's a horror movie, but i decided to watch the first movie first online (and then the second one online too hahaha)-it's SO MUCH BETTER than i expected! Creepy, effective, and with unexpected twist!

Nichole Barlow returned to her childhood house to take care for her mother's funeral and asked her sister Annie to help her, Annie refused since she's too traumatized with how their mother treated them. After making a video call to her daughter, Nichole disappeared and Annie had no choice but went back to look for her. Their cousin Liz has Nichole's daughter (Eva), three of them met at the funeral house and Annie asked Liz to accompany her stay at her mother's house but Liz too, disappear that night. Annie witnessed violent supernatural events leading to Liz's disappearance but of course the authority does not believe her and Annie became a suspect instead.A detective, Bill, decided to help her and together they return to the house to try to investigate what's really happening, more danger are waiting for them.

It's not the perfect horror movie (and it's definitely not in Insidious or The Conjuring level!), lots of plot holes (and it's actually an indie movie with a shoe string budget) that gave me a lot of questions, but it's actually very good! One of the most effective horror movie i've seen in a while. If you're a huge horror movie fan like me, i highly recommend you to check it out!

Review : Everest Movie (and Interesting Facts about Mt. Everest)

So i actually didn't have any plan to do a single movie review this month-and even after i watched this movie i still didn't intend to make one, but after more than a week later and i am still obsessing over it (not the movie in particular, but the stories around the event), i decided that i should do a stand-alone review for this movie so i can talk about it more than what i limit myself to do for my monthly reviews!

Everest

This movie is based on a true story (that doesn't mean that every single scene really happened in real life, of course they gotta make it more dramatic to engage the viewers) of what's known as "1996 Mount Everest Disaster" where 8 people died in a single day on May 10th 1996 (the event took course between 10-11th). I knew nothing of this story when it really happened (i was 13, and world news didn't interest me back then), so i went to the movie knowing nothing.

The movie follows the journey of Rob Hall (a famous mountaineering turned commercial mountain guide with very good credentials) and his team (of paid clients and hired Sherpas) that intertwined with his rival guide, Scott Fischer, during their attempt to summit the highest mountain on earth, Mount Everest. Everything seems to be going pretty well, but for some reasons some of the climbers (including Rob and Scott) got stuck in the area called "death zone" when a violent storm strikes.

We (the viewers) were gripped in our seats while we watched those men and women tried to survive, and we wept when Rob talked to his wife for one last time (did i ruin it for ya? So sorry, i mean... If you google the story you'd know Rob didn't make it so i hope it's okay that i spill it) and marvel at the majestic beauty that is the Everest (seriously you guys, watch it in Imax. You need to see it in 3D too).

The movie itself is pretty good, it's not actually mind blowingly good, it's pretty long and the first half of the movie (the preparation and character introduction part) might be boring for some people (although it didn't bore me). Also, i feel like the actors really did a good job in depicting the very real people. Of course, Jake Gyllenhaal caught my eyes, i always sort of fancy him anyway *LOL*.

And another one that stole my attention was Jason Clarke. I've watched him in many movies by now, never even remotely found him attractive *LOL*, but his role as Rob Hall made me see what makes him a leading man. He is charismatic and draw you in, especially with those icy blue eyes.

I definitely would recommend this movie (but maybe not if you're easily bored and very impatient because like i mentioned earlier, it takes a while to get to the action part), if only for the view, or the eye candies.

But while i really like the movie, it's the story itself that is magnetizing to me. What makes people so drawn to Everest that they would risk their lives trying to conquer it? What's so special? And other than the obvious, why is it so hard to climb it, and the fact that i killed even the best in the mountaineering world-although it is said to be a very straight forward kind of mountain with all the commercial climbing services available. It is not, let's say, K2 (seriously, my mountaineering vocab has grown exponentially since i watched Everest *LOL*, never heard of K2 before either)!

More over, there were so many unexplainable, confusing scenes in the movie that made both hunny and i confused. What just happened...? Anyhoo, if you haven't watched this movie and planning to, you might want to stop here (spoiler alert!!!) and come back when you're done (please do! Let's discuss it!) but if you've watched it/not planning to, then go right ahead.

After i watched Everest, i got what i call cyber Everest bug, i became super curious and wanted to know a lot more about what happened on May 10th 1996, i began searching for stories (and ended up reading Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer *finished it within two days*, the journalist who was in Rob Hall expedition, and he also commented that the movie version of his story is "bull" LOL), interviews with the survivors (i also sadly found that some of the initial survivors died within months/years, often in other mountaineering accidents) and also obsessively watched documentaries about Everest (surprise? I love documentaries. I know a lot of people think i am an air head just because i love makeup and fashion, and i can be a little off when i talk about things that don't interest me-but trust me, i am anything but stupid. In fact i might be a lot smarter than most of you hahaha).

What makes people risk their lives to reach the summit?

I don't know about you, but what i really wanted to know was the stuffs that made me confused throughout the movie. If like me, you know nothing about mountaineering, then you'd probably be as confused as me (or not. Tell ya i can be a bit bimbotic at times) so imma shed the light in all of those questions.

First of all, i was very confused when in once scene while they were ascending, they seemed to passed what seemed to be... a human. The person was lying down but the team just passed him/her with nothing more than a little glance. I was like... What the hell was that in the scene, was it really a human? If yes then why nobody seemed to be concerned seeing someone lying in the snow in the middle of nowhere?

The answer comes very quickly, that yes-it is a human. A human's body, to be exact. As in he/she is no longer alive, and haven't been for a while. Over 200 climbers have lost their lives in Everest and most of them still lie there at this very moment-where they fell/collapsed and never stood again.The reason why they are left there varies, mostly because it's almost impossible (and very expensive) to try to get them down the mountain (especially if they lie around the death zone), another reason is because the families of the person never gave their consent to move the bodies.

Why were the expedition members didn't seem to bat an eyelash upon passing the body? Because unlike me, they already knew there were going to be a lot of bodies lying around (mostly covered with snow but some are still very visible) and they also know if they became incapacitated while in the death zone, they might very well become one of those bodies as well because nobody can save them but themselves. If they became unable to walk/move by themselves, there's just no way that anyone else can help carry them down.

What is the death zone? It's the area above 8000 meters where there is simply not enough oxygen for human to breathe. There is simply no way to acclimatize and human cannot survive more than 48 hours there. Your body would literally be dying once you're in the death zone so you must summit and go down as quickly as possible (which is also quite impossible because when breathing is so hard, climbing is even harder!). If a climber got injured/collapsed in the death zone, it is generally accepted that they would be left to die unless they can move.

I was also confused when i saw the scene where Andy Harris just kept on saying there's no full oxygen bottle and Jon Krakauer kept on telling him it's there. I was like, what is going on? Where is the oxygen? Did the Sherpa forgot to stash the fresh supplies there? Or someone else use them?

The answer was : there are fresh oxygen stash. Most probably Andy Harris was already suffering from an altitude sickness, one of the very first sign of which is confusion. That's why he was insisting that there was no full oxygen tank even though there clearly were. This, according to Into Thin Air, is one of the critical points in which contributes greatly to tragedy. Of course, we'll never know, but from what i read, that's the reason why the scene i mentioned earlier was there.

Another interesting thing to me about the movie vs real life is the age difference between Rob Hall and Scott Fischer. When they died, Rob was 35 (very young, that explains why his wife was expecting their first child) and Scott was 40-the actor playing Rob is 46 years old Jason Clarke, while Jake Gyllenhaal who played Scott is 34. I initially thought Rob's much older than Scott because i watched the movie first, but now i know better!

Oh well, i don't know if any readers of this blog would even find this interesting, but i am so fascinated and i need to share it!

I can't think of any more things to add, so... Imma stop here. And not going to post a selfie here because i'm superstitious and i already don't like posting dead people's pics in this blog, let alone sharing space with my selfie *LOL*.

January Movies

Hellooo...

Anyone waiting for my monthly movies review? No? Oh well hahaha. I've been postponing this post as usual (somehow reviews use the most brain cells for me...) but here it is, still in early February category right... January's always been quite off-movies wise-for me *sigh*. I didn't even realize that we watched SO MANY movies last month!

Mainly because most of them are so mediocre i don't even remember watching them *LOL*. Since i have so many movies to share, better start right off!

1. Paddington

Quite obviously Baby Boy's movie, but i was honestly quite excited to watch it because i liked the trailer and thought Paddington's way too cute. Well, i quite liked the movie as a whole. It's cute, quite funny and entertaining. It's a solid, warm-hearted family movie-perfect to bring your little ones to. Nothing spectacularly amazing for me though, somehow the funniest bits were already shown in the trailer...

A young Peruvian bear just lost his family and went to London in search for a new home. He met the Brown family who offered him a temporary home (until he found his new home, that is). Being unaccustomed to city life, he created quite a trouble and caught the eye of an evil taxidermist, keen on making him the newest addition to her collection.

I would definitely recommend this movie if you have a young child, but even if you don't-it's still quite worth watching. I am not terribly excited or whatever, but it is quite good *why do i feel like i sound super unconvincing hahaha-it got a high 7.6 rate in IMDb, i don't manage to convince you :p*. I especially love how crazy and evil Nicole Kidman can be, and she seems to like being a villain for kids movies!

2. The Eyes Diary

I LOVE Asian horrors! Nowadays Hollywood seems to do more and more horror movies that suit my fancy (The Conjuring is definitely my fave Hollywood horror movie of all time), but nobody does it as well as the Asian! I don't always get Japanese or Korean horror movies that have very confusing storyline and annoying cliff-hanger endings (i HATE cliff-hangers -___-), but i love love love South East Asia horror movies. Maybe because i understand and relate to the cultures better? Or their ghosts are very familiar and similar to our own urban legends/horror stories? One of our neighboring countries that has the best horror movies for me is definitely Thailand.

Our local cinemas in Surabaya *we sadly only have XXIs zzzz* don't show a lot of Asian movies, and almost no Thai movies so whenever we're in Jakarta, i make a point of checking the movies that are playing in Blitz Megaplex, most of the time they would at least have one or two Asian horrors that would never play in my city. This time round they were showing The Eyes Diary (i think it has no relation to the Chinese The Eye movies despite the resemblance in titles) and a Japanese horror, of course i picked the Thai one. I had no expectation whatsoever, sometime you score but sometimes Thai horror movies can also be so ridiculously bad hahaha. It's always a gamble-but i'm glad to find out that this movie's not bad at all!

Nott recently lost his girlfriend due to an accident, he's very miserable and is willing to do anything to be able to see and talk to Pla (the girlfriend) again-as a spirit/ghost. It's obviously not an easy thing to do, especially because he is not supernaturally sensitive. Even when all of his friends managed to see ghosts one way or another, he never does. He even voluntarily join an emergency crew whose job is to clean up and pick up on dead bodies and their belongings-secretly stealing dead people's stuffs so that they would come to him and look for their stuffs.

There are two types of horror movies that Thai does best, one that is super serious and scary like Shutter, and the other type is the comedic horror. Unlike most of Indonesian super silly and almost-porn comedic horrors, Thais often manage to create a really funny horror movies. The Eye Diary is not the best Thai horror i have ever seen, but it struck the balance between scary and funny quite well. One thing about Asian movies, most of them are still unable to avoid huge plotholes and super silly (as in stupid) scenes, and this one is no exception. But i liked it a lot! It's funny, it's quite scary and i had a great time and didn't get bored watching it. If you like Asian horrors, especially the funny ones-i would recommend you to check it out!

3. Outcast

I saw the trailer and for some unknown reasons i thought it'd be good :p. I should really be cautious when i see Nicholas Cage really, been burnt way too many times by his movies lately-i should know to avoid them like a plague from now on zzzz. But seriously, i moderately like Hayden Christiensen and i love Liu Yifei-she's one of the prettiest Asian star at the moment in my opinion (the prettiest if still Fan Bing Bing ^^) and i like seeing her in movies. I was quite excited to see her branching out into Hollywood movies, but... well.... She should've picked her movie better *LOL*

Liu Yifei is has the perfect face and demeanor to play a sweet and demure Chinese Princess!

A mysterious (Caucasian) warrior somehow made his way to China during the complicated and full of drama Emperor time and stumbled into a little prince and his elder sister who are running away from their evil brother (the crowned Prince who just killed his Emperor father because the Emperor wanted to pick his little brother as his heir instead), he ended up helping them escaping.

Well. The storyline is already so weak, but it could be a saveable movie if only : 1. They have Chinese dialogs (at least between the Chinese actors, i understand that they'd need to speak English to the Western casts), 2. Hayden acts less drunk and 3. They get rid of Nicholas Cage *LOL*.

I don't even know where to begin... I actually think Hayden and Yifei had a pretty good chemistry together, they were quite convincing as two people falling for each other (but i am conflicted to see such a demure Princess being so promiscuous *LOL*. Not that i'd know how Princesses of old are like, but it's just such a different portrayal than those traditional Chinese Princesses that i know. At least i don't think they would be so aggresive-due to their upbringing) but that's probably the only good thing about this movie.

It's just so weird to see Chinese people in an old Chinese kingdom setting, wearing tradional costumes talking in perfectly American accented English (and later there's even a young girl with British accent. WTF). It's just weird (just as weird as seeing Egyptians speaks perfect English to each other in Moses) and make the dialogs very disconnected with the movie.

Hayden's usually a pretty good actor, isn't he? But in the first half of the movie, he plays a drunk-but that's the problem. He ACTS drunk, and we can tell *LOL*. He's just not very convincing either. And Nicholas Cage, my GOD, it was probably the worst performance by him yet. He was crazy with a very very weird accent, and he kept on forgetting to keep one of his eyes *that's supposed to be blinded and shut close* close -_____-. He just made the whole movie go from bad to horrible.

In short, it was not the worst movie of the year-but probably one of the candidates *LOL*. My advise is definitely to skip it. It's not worth your time! Not even on DVD.. (i hope this stupid movie does not halt Liu Yifei's Hollywood career -___- i'd love to see her in more Hollywood movies-just not as stupid as this one, PLEASE!)

4. Taken 3

I do not remember the first Taken movie (i don't think we even watched it... Or did we?) but i liked the second one-hunny did too so we're mildly excited when the third installment hits the theater.

Liam Neeson reprise his role as Bryan Mills, the ex-government operative. He was framed of murdering his ex-wife and went on a run in search of the real murderer. He has to evade CIA, FBI and the police all the while.

Well... I liked the previous movie better! LOL. It's an action movie, so... Storyline is not that important really, at least if the action sequence's cool enough to keep you entertained. I find this third movie lacked the suspense and breath-taking actions that the second movie has. It has more story and heart in it, but it still pales in comparison to its predecessor. If you are a fan of Taken movies, then i guess you should still go to see this, but personally i prefer the second movie better.

It's not bad, but it's not that good.

5. Assalamualaikum Beijing

So you probably already know by now that i like to support local products, including movies. However, i have not been watching Indonesian movies for a while because i didn't see any that caught my fancy lately. One day out of the blue, my cousin L bugged me to watch either Assalamualaikum Beijing or Merry Riana. Since i definitely have no interest to see the second option, i went to google Assalamualaikum Beijing and find the synopsis pretty interesting-so we went to watch it (movie date with cousin L hahaha).

Asmara is an Indonesian Moslem woman about to get married to her boyfriend-but one day prior to the wedding, he admits his affair with another woman who's now bearing his child. Heartbroken and in need of a fresh beginning, Asmara moved to Beijing, China. Her best friend and her husband helped Asmara scored a reporting/writing job in Beijing. Her job requires her to visit different destinations in Beijing and one day she met Zongwen, a handsome Chinese guy who's fluent in Indonesian because of his job as a tour guide.

I didn't have any expectation going in, and i admit making the crime of discussing and nitpicking everything on the screen with L *LOL* (we made a point of sititing faraway from other audiences though), but i ended up enjoying it a LOT more than i thought i would be. Revalina S. Temat's a seasoned actress so you can count on her to deliver, i especially love Laudya Cynthia Bella's portrayal of her hubbly, animated and talkactive BFF, she brings humor and light heartedness to the movie-i'd say she needs to get more comedic roles coz she's good at it, but who really surprised me was Morgan Oey. I admit that i judged him for his SMASH (Indonesian boyband that pretty much copies K-Pop band-not very successfully as well *LOL*. Don't get me wrong, somehow they have quite a huge fan base, but i... I don't even like K-Pop, so K-Pop imitation is just... yekh) past, but he actually held his own and was able to match Revalina's acting in this movie.

Indonesian does make drama movies best, although sometimes romance movies makes me wince and cringe, but not this one. The story flows effortlessly (because it was based on a novel, and that's always best coz Indonesia really does have wonderful literature writers!), the acting were excellent, the cinematographic quite wonderful and the whole thing very engaging. I find myself immersed in the story and had no regrets watching it. I also praise the writer to avoid a sensitive subject for Indonesian, in this case religion change-i like how they make the person who's making the transition did not have a religion in the first place, which if he did might insult some people (we're sensitive people, Indonesian *LOL*).

My only complain would be the way they stereotyped China so much, particularly to music they played in the movie >.<. Don't get me wrong, i am not sensitive because i am Chinese-but it's just a bit annoying because that's really not the kind of music all Chinese people would be happy to be associated to. Read on and you'd see that i am equally as offended when people stereotyped Indonesian with cliches that are not even accurate!

6. Woman in Black 2 : Angel of Death

I know it's not everybody's cup of tea (received a pretty low rate in IMDb), but i actually liked the first Woman in Black. It was creepy, haunting and disturbing, all in the right way. So i had a pretty high hope for the sequel, i was pretty excited about watching it. Sadly it's nowhere near as good as the first movie (maybe i should be alarmed when i see no Daniel Radcliff on the cast hahaha).

40 years after the first movie was set, during World War II a group of children escaped London and seek refuge at the Eel Marsh house under the care of two women. Their arrival awakened The Woman in Black and terror was soon upon them.

Yeah well, it started out okay-it was quite creepy in a quiet, haunting way. But after the same quietness continues in the next half an hour, i realized that the movie will never pick up. It's flat, monotonous and quite frankly-boring. Even the ghost did not scare me one bit hehe. That's weird because it's the same ghost from the first movie, but even she has lost her charm *LOL*.

In short, it's boring and totally failed if it was supposed to creep the hell out of me : NEXT!

7. Blackhat

I never heard about this movie before it was playing, and Sabsab already told me that the movie's... not that good, but i was sold once i saw Wang Lee Hom's in it (one of the most handsome face, ever *LOL*) :p. I was also doubly curious when i heard that part of the movie's shot in Jakarta, Indonesia-so we went to watch it despite the worrying warning signs *LOLOLOL*.

A nuclear plant was attacked in China by a hacker who caused the coolant pump to overheat and explode, a military officer named Chen Dawei (the dreamy Wang Lee Hom) was appointed to find the terrorist, he enlisted his sister Lien and they went to LA to team up with the USA to crack the case. It was then revealed that the worm used on the attack was written by himself and his friend Nicholas Hathaway (who's doing jail time for computer crime) during college. He requested for Nick to be released to help him find the hackers who they suspected would strike again soon.

Actually i find the first half of the movie to be quite okay, a bit slow but still bearable. Had a bit of a hard time keeping up with all those technical and computer language so it was a bit boring-but still okay. It pains me to say this, but when they reached Jakarta-any semblance of coherence went out the door. It became shaky, confusing and extremely unbelievable (not in a good way, God no!)-it was supposed to be the climax-but it turned to be extremely ridiculous and weird that it became a total anti climax instead.

I don't understand why, but the cinematography were so different when the setting was in LA and even Hong Kong to those that was shot in Jakarta. At least in the first half, it still felt like a decent Hollywood-class movie, but it became badly indie-like (almost embarrassingly sinetron like) *no disrespect to indie movies, there are a LOT of good ones, but in this case i meant that it seems to be lacked of fund*. It's just so bad! Even the bank looked sooo fake, it was stupid. As an Indonesian i also cannot help but laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of a huge Hindu celebration in Jakarta (they should really shoot in Bali if they want this), or how some Ondel-ondel just came out of nowhere in the background. It's like they're trying so hard to cram all Indonesian elements into a few scenes, none of which is even remotely believable. And the terrorist's boss? He's so stupid, it's sad. *LOL.

It's sadly, a BAD movie in general, i think it'd be best to just skip it. I liked the actors though, even though people say Chris Hemsworth is all wrong for the part, i don't mind his acting, and i like his chemistry with Tang Wei. That's rare because even with Natalie Portman i didn't feel like he was in love with her at all in Thor. And Wang Lee Hom is GOOD. I didn't know that he can act so well! Now that i think about it, all fell apart after his character died. Wait, did i just give you a spoiler? Well, didn't i tell you not to watch it?

The only saving grace of this movie :

8. Seventh Son

Oh well. In case you don't already think i am a boy-crazy teenager trapped in a body of a 31 year old married woman, now you will coz i really really wanted to watch this movie solely for this.

Oh, and the trailer looked good :p. It's a fantasy adventure movie, right up our alleys...

Thomas Ward is a normal farm boy who gets a vision from time to time, but he always knew that he's meant to do something more. One day John Gregory (Jeff Bridges is hilarious...), who is a local spook who protects his country from anything unusual (as in witches, boggarts, ghouls, etc) lost his current apprentice and went to look for another-who has to be a seventh son of the seventh son-Thomas Ward is it. They had very little time to train because Mother Malkin', the most dangerous witch of all, has freed herself from the prison Gregory trapped her in many many years ago.

It's a fun film! It really is. Entertaining, with good humor, great costumes, better looking casts and awesome villain. Julianne Moore should play fantastical villains more often, she was SMOKING! But having said that, it's... just that. A popcorn movie. It was very entertaining and i loved it, but it didn't leave any deep impression and i'd forget all about it within a few days. But it is good, so if you like light hearted (well, there are some deaths too but nothing too gruesome, at least for me), funny and entertaining fantasy adventure, you should totally watch it!

The only thing i was quite taken aback with was how brief Kit Harrington's role was *LOL*, it was so short it was shocking! His name shouldn't even be in the credit #LOLOLOL. But no matter, it was Ben Barnes i watched this movie for anyway, and he didn't disappoint. I know i rave about different guys every month (and i seem to almost always spot a cutie in any movie hahaha), but Ben Barnes really is one of my absolute favorite, since his Prince of Caspian days-with scrawny body and ridiculous hair! I think i will always love him ^^!

Especially now that he's so manly and all. He's my only choice to play Christian Grey (Fifty Shades of Grey). DROOL!

9. The Imitation Game

I don't know why but whenever hunny asks to watch this type of movies-i am always the one who ended up enjoying it a lot more than he does!

It is based on the real life story of Alan Turing, the legendary cryptanalyst. It flashes back and forth from his current self, then to him when he was a young boy in school and then to his time during WWII-when he was recruited by English government on a top-secret mission to crack the enigma code with the other mathematicians to help their country win the war against Germany.

I loved it!!! It's such a SMART, BRILLIANT and interesting movie! The life of Alan Turing is so fascinating, and i didn't even know that being gay was once considered a crime. WTH. Other than the very engaging storyline, Benedict Cumberbatch's acting is... To the roof! He totally embodied this genius, who's so literal and obsessive that he's having difficulties in day to day social life. Think Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, but in a serious way. Seriously, those kinds of roles should only be done by Benedict Cumberbatch (the serious ones) and Jim Parsons (the crazy ones).

It's definitely not for everyone though, it's highly non-popcorn movie, i noticed the guy sitting near me kept on yawning and shifting and complaining about how he's falling asleep. It's a movie for smart people who wants to use their brain but not so heavy that it cease to entertain (like some Oscar winning movies hehe). And you must. Focus. Like Benedict as Alan Turing said "Are you paying attention?"

10. Vice

I love sci-fi with A.I theme (or something similar to that. Basically i love the idea of very humanoid robots, cloning, artifically controlled environment, or using avatars in real life!) so when i read the synopsis of this movie, i was interested.

Julian Michaels (Bruce Willis) is the CEO and designer of VICE : a controlled environment built like a city within a city where you can do whatever you want and live out your wildest (and cruelest) fantasies with the artificial inhabitants who look, speak, think and feel like real human. You can rape them, you can torture them, you can even kill them-they'll bleed, they'll cry and they'll die-but they'll be reset and restored exactly how they were every single day. An artifical suddenly became self-aware and escaped, she then being hunted by both Julian's goons and a cop who hates VICE and trying all his might to shut it down.

Weeellll... I LOVE the idea. It's just fascinating if you can actually create artificial that are super humanoid, and even more fascinating if there is such a place like Vice! I honestly am sick on the head enough to be one of those who'd visit it, but i have no desire to kill anything-not even a robot, don't worry. But that's where the greatness end *LOL*. The awesome idea never got developed enough to be an awesome movie. If it was up to me, i'd explore more about VICE and the people who visits them-and reduce the chasing part to a minimum. Get to know the characters better, because we never got the chance to. We never even knew enough to start caring for the.

Granted, i didn't hate the movie at all. Nope, i even find the 4.0 rate in IMBDb harsh, i'd give it... 6.5? Even 7. It was quite entertaining-although i do agree the action scenes were not gripping or exciting, and it was really annoying to see people (supposedly trained, merciless mercenaries) shooting like mad but hitting nothing while the bad-boy wannabe cop always manages to shoot point blank, no matter where his position is (and leave with barely a scratch when more than 5 people shoot at him at once) *LOL*. It's just plain ridiculous.

If like me, you love A.I movies, i don't think it would hurt to give it a watch. Maybe on DVD?

ANDDDD, we've finally come to the end of the super long post! Phew, watched 10 movies in one month! My favorite would be The Eyes Diary and The Imitation Game-for very different reasons, i also enjoyed Seventh Son and Assalamualaikum Beijing a lot. My least fave's Outcast, and Blackhat's the close runner up hehe.
